And the follow-up meeting specificly on Formulation and Neutrons held at the UK's spalation neutron source ISIS at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire on 27th June 2016. A summary of the talks given and the presentations are here - Formulation and Neutrons.
The Formulation Science and Technology Group held an exciting new conference which showed how characterisation has enabled smarter formulation.
Historically formualtion was seen as more of an art than a science, slowly through the application of colloid science combined with the principles of chemical processing and laterly through the use of good scientific practice such as statistical design of experiments, formulation has become a science and in many case now a well controlled engineering process.
However, due to the complexity of many formualtions this has been achieved through direct connection of recipes and processing conditions with required application properties, without understanding of the physical and chemical structures which give rise to these properties.
This meeting showcased a growing number of examples where the range of currently available characterisation techniques has demonstrated the controlling structural features in complex formulations.
The techniques covered in presentations and posters included: 3D electron microscopy, in-situ microscopy techniqued, X-ray tomography, AFM-IR, NMR, surface energy measurement, particle velocimetry.
Speakers:
Dr. Tim Burnett, The University of Manchester
Correlative Tomography: 3D characterization across time and length scales
Professor Vitaliy Khutoryanskiy, The University of Reading
