Sixth International Conference:

Advances in Corrosion Protection by Organic Coatings

Christ’s College, Cambridge

20-22 July 2015

 David Scantlebury

Introduction

Many of you will remember my late colleague, David Scantlebury, who delighted in academic discourse, pleasant surroundings and excellent food. Many years ago, when he became frustrated at the lack of events that covered his favourite subject, organic coatings, he invented this one. First held in 1989, close to the start of my own academic career, he ensured that the event was informal, and held in the most conducive atmosphere he could think of (Cambridge) settling on Christ’s College as within the city centre (his own alma mater, Downing, being some distance away).

David last organised this quinquenniel event in 2009 so we are now one year out of synchronisation; even more so given we are only around 6 months to its start in July. Nevertheless, I hope that as many of you as possible who knew David will be able to attend as well as the younger audience he dedicated his life imparting his wisdom to.

We are keen that this conference should reflect the state-of-the-art in organic coatings technologies, mechanisms, understanding, surface treatments, inhibition, testing and any other related matters.

David’s original introduction and remarks are further down this page.

Programme

Advances in Corrosion Protection by Organic Coatings (ACPOC) will run over 3 days at Christ’s College as a single session from Monday 20th July to Wednesday 22nd July, starting Monday mid-morning and ending Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday 23rd July there will be a special one-day event focussing on the AkzoNobel / University of Manchester research partnership in corrosion protection which will be open by invitation. Please let us know whether you would be interested in attending on Thursday.

Oral presentations for ACPOC (around 30 minutes) are solicited from senior, mid-career, junior and student colleagues alike with no preference – in a single session there are no plenaries! Poster presentations are also possible though bear in mind that poster authors will still be required to talk for 5 minutes about their work to the audience.

The registration fee of £??? will include all refreshments, luncheons, sherry reception with madrigals on Monday night and conference dinner in the Hall on Tuesday.

David’s Introduction

“One purpose of a research meeting is to try to recreate the atmosphere of the “community of scholars”. Like-minded people with a curiosity about a particular part of the universe gather together in an appropriate and creative place and present, discuss, argue and learn. The previous Conferences in Cambridge in 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009 succeeded in this aim. The combination of enthusiastic and argumentative audiences, single session meetings, creative timekeeping, the cloistered and magical Cambridge atmosphere, informal discussion facilities close by, excellent presentations and good food and wines, made for exhausting but illuminating week.

We will be running a similar meeting at the same college, the college of John Milton and Charles Darwin, between 14th and 18th September 2009 using the same format as the previous Conferences. In particular, to encourage new ideas and up to date presentations, we will be calling for a late submission of the extended abstracts to try to reduce the delay between the generation of data and its public presentation. In view of this, we will be late in issuing the final timetable. If the author wishes, submission of full papers may be made at the Conference.”

Accommodation

Christ’s College is right in the city centre and has a block of relatively high quality student-style accommodation and it is expected that most delegates will wish to stay in the College. For those who wish to stay elsewhere, information on hotels within walking distance of the Conference is readily available on the web.

Conference Content

Papers in the following areas are to be welcomed: polymer film formation, transport properties, pigments, adhesion, smart coatings, interfacial modification, adhesion enhancement, under-film corrosion, blistering, dis-bonding, polymer degradation, metallic and non-metallic substrates, conversion layers, surface preparation, unusual environments, electro-polymers, filiform corrosion, rust converters, assessment of surfaces, accelerated testing. Other research areas not covered by the above but within the general theme of the Conference will also be acceptable.

Publication

Selected conference papers will be published in a special issue of Corrosion Engineering Science and Technology
