The Role of Green Chemistry in Sustainable Formulations

There is enormous pressure on industry to make and use chemicals that are perceived as being greener and more sustainable.  The pressures reach across the life cycle including the greater use of renewable resources, cleaner manufacturing, and the production of chemicals with low toxicity and environmental impact.  Formulators have to face customer as well as legislative pressure to somehow respond to these pressures, yet token substitution of one or two components may make the overall green credentials of a product less certain and possibly worse,  The potential for  renewable resource feedstocks and green chemical technologies that can be used to exploit them will be considered as will the "bigger picture" issues of how to make a genuinely greener formulated product.
